The morenada is one of the iconic dances of colorful Bolivian celebrations such as the Oruro Carnival and the La Paz festival of the Lord Jesus of Great Power, both declared World Heritage by Unesco.
Bolivia issued a law in 2014 declaring September 7 the "National Day of La Morenada Dance", in recognition of composer and researcher José "El Jach'a" Flores, author of the most famous Bolivian morenadas.
One of the figures of this dance is the emblematic and elegant chola paceña, the Aymara woman with long hair gathered in two braids, who wears her best clothes including her traditional dark-colored bowler hat, skirt, blouse and blanket with flaming tones and valuable jewelry.
The men, called "morenos", wear heavy costumes embroidered with sequins, pearls and beads, as well as masks crowned with enormous feathers that move from one side to the other to the rhythm of the slow and rhythmic step of this dance, which evokes the situation of the African slaves who arrived in Bolivian territory during the colony.
