Every year this day is remembered to the students from different educational centers in Uruguay who were attacked, assassinated, or captured and killed by torture, while participating in demonstrations, meetings, stickers or other activities related to their militancy. On August 14, 1968, the first student martyr, Liber Arce, died after being shot by the police while participating in a demonstration for the university budget and in demand of the student ticket. He was a student of the School of Dentistry.
Later other students died in similar circumstances: Hugo de los Santos, Susana Pintos, Heber Nieto, Julio Spósito, Íbero Gutiérrez, Santiago Rodríguez Muela, Joaquín Klüver, Ramón Peré, Walter Medina, Nibia Sabalsagaray.
On Student Martyrs' Day, thousands of students who were persecuted, detained or tortured during the dictatorship are also remembered. In addition to this march, in the last years different initiatives of departmental and local governments, social, student and workers' organizations have been carried out in order to preserve the memory of Uruguayans about the victims of these events and the sites of repression.
