Geographer's Day is celebrated in Venezuela every May 30, this is a professional in charge of studying the interactions generated between human beings and the environment that surrounds them. The use of geography has served over the years to know the functioning of the different ecosystems found in the world, the study of the physical characteristics and how certain natural events originate as a result of their particularities, geography has also allowed the study of space and how humans have modified their resources and environments in their societies.
Venezuelan geographers generally graduate from the Universidad de los Andes, in Mérida, or from the Universidad Central de Venezuela, in Caracas. The Geographer is a professional trained in both social sciences and earth sciences, in this sense he/she is capable of integrating the socioeconomic elements of the population with the elements of nature. The Geographer has taken a prominent role in today's world, where large amounts of resources are spent on the environment and which must be measured with caution so as not to generate a negative impact on it.
In Venezuela and the world, the fields of study of Geography have diversified, such as: Geomorphology, Cartography, Climatology, Geographic Information Systems, and Environmental Impact Studies. This profession is indispensable to face the environmental challenges that are posed for the coming years: Global Warming, desertification processes in natural environments, the decrease of natural resources, so that populations increase and these generate more expenditure of resources.
Great geographers have made their contributions to humanity, among them Alexander Von Humboldt and Bonpland who explored the Venezuelan lands, studying its flora, fauna, mineral resources, rivers, soils, and phenomena. They also observed Venezuelan indigenous customs.
