Animal Day is celebrated in Argentina every April 29 in commemoration of the death of Ignacio Lucas Albarracín, a lawyer who was the country's great pioneer in the fight for animal rights.
Albarracín was born in the city of Córdoba on July 31, 1850 and after obtaining his law degree, he decided to dedicate his life to the defense of animals. He believed that although animals had a lower level of reasoning than humans, they should not be martyred or punished.
He was secretary of the Argentine Society for the Protection of Animals from its beginning (1879) and succeeded Domingo Faustino Sarmiento in its presidency in 1885. From there, he was a forerunner in the fight against cockfighting, colt taming, bullfighting and pigeon shooting.
