Often spiced with cinnamon, salt, nutmeg, and cloves, these brown sugar and raisin-based cookies are often called simply hermits. The legend has it that the hermit cookies were Sailors and Travellers' companions. However the cookie came by its reclusive name—and there's no clear answer—the hermit was a cookie that traveled. During the 1890s and 1950s, this cookie was a crowd favorite due to its preservability and mix of spices, especially in the New England area of the US.
Dozens of stories suggest that sailors coveted the cookies that would "keep" as they sailed clippers down the the Eastern Seaboard and beyond.
