Churchill was rated as one of the most influential leaders in history by TIME.
Churchill's reputation among the general British public remains high: he was voted number one in a 2002 BBC poll of the 100 Greatest Britons of all time.
He is also held in respect in the United States. In 1963 he was made an Honorary U.S. Citizen, and in 1995 the U.S. named a new Arleigh Burke-class destroyer the USS Winston S. Churchill.
