La Merced, in Catalan La Mercè, is the main festival of Barcelona, Spain. It is celebrated every year around September 24, the day of the Virgin of Mercy. It lasts about a week and takes place in various public spaces of the city. It gathers annually between 1.5 and 2 million people around different cultural, artistic and festive activities, being the most multitudinous festival of all those celebrated in Barcelona. Its origin dates back to 1902, when the city council first drew up a program of special events to celebrate the feast of the Virgin of Mercy (Mare de Déu de la Mercè in Catalan). In 1980 it was declared a Festival of National Tourist Interest.
