The drafting and approval of the Declaration was not only a consequence of the horrors that occurred during the Second World War, it was also the result of centuries of slow progress in human rights. Its most notable precedent was undoubtedly the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen of 1789. The Declaration was intended to be a provisional thing, to be later modified by the Assembly when it negotiated a new constitution. Amidst this optimistic atmosphere, the Assembly approved the Declaration of the Rights of Man on August 26, 1789.
