The "bird wedding" celebrated by children on January 25 is combined with observations of the plant and animal world. At this time, some species of birds begin nesting and laying eggs, while people wait for spring to awaken after winter.
This custom, which dates back to pre-Christian times, is based on the mystical ideas of our ancestors. Upper Lusatia is considered the area of origin of this custom, as it is widely spread there.
In Lower Lusatia, the custom has taken hold in kindergartens and schools. Children feed the birds in winter and can take part in the wedding as a reward. They put out plates and bowls on the windowsill and receive magpie-shaped bread.
In kindergartens, the "bird wedding" is celebrated with a magpie as the bride and a raven as the groom. The brides and grooms are festively dressed, usually in Lusatian folk costume. Other children are dressed as birds. The day is spent dancing and singing.
Adults organize social evenings, where the "bird wedding" is presented by a folk band.
