Treinta y tres (33) Orientales, group of patriots of the Banda Oriental (i.e., Uruguay) who in 1825 initiated the final struggle against Brazilian rule. They were led by Juan Antonio Lavalleja, who had fought with the exiled Artigas. The 33 Orientals secretly crossed the Plata River, landing on the Eastern Bank on 19 April, 1825, planted the forbidden national flag and took an oath to kick the Brazilian government out of Uruguay.
Four months later, Uruguay declared independence from Brazil. Finally, after more than two years of war, Brazil signed a peace treaty with Uruguay, and on August 27, 1828, Uruguay became independent.
