The 'Kisan Diwas' or National Farmers Day is observed across the country on 23rd December to celebrate the birth anniversary of "Champion of Indian Peasants" of Chaudhary Charan Singh, the former Prime Minister of India.
Chaudhary Charan Singh (23 December 1902 – 29 May 1987) served as the 5th Prime Minister of India between 28 July 1979 to 14 January 1980. Historians and people alike frequently refer to him as the 'champion of India's peasants'.
In 2001, the then government designated Charan Singh's birth anniversary as Kisan Diwas. Singh, who believed in living a simple life, spent most of his spare time reading and writing. During his lifetime, Singh wrote many books and pamphlets.
