A Bundt cake is a cake that is baked in a Bundt pan, shaping it into a distinctive doughnut shape. Bundt cakes have several characteristics that set them apart from other cakes: Bundt cake pans have fluted edges, making the cakes look elegant even before decoration. The pans have a hole down the middle, which means the cakes come out with a donut shape. The hole helps the cakes cook more evenly.
Two out of every three American households have at least one bundt pan in their kitchen. More than 70 million pans have been produced in Nordic Ware's Minneapolis factory. The bundt pan was named after the German word “bund,” which means a gathering of people.
The shape is inspired by a traditional European cake known as Gugelhupf, but Bundt cakes are not generally associated with any single recipe. The style of mold in North America was popularized in the 1950s and 1960s, after cookware manufacturer Nordic Ware trademarked the name "Bundt" and began producing Bundt pans from cast aluminum. Publicity from Pillsbury saw the cakes gain widespread popularity.
