On January 31, the Day of Street Children is celebrated in Austria, while the Catholic Church celebrates the memorial day of the youth saint Don Bosco. January 31st was established as Street Children's Day by the aid organization "Youth One World", which draws attention to the suffering of street children all over the world every year. This aid organization was founded in 1997 and since then has been committed to helping children and young people who have no home. After 20 years, there are improvements in the international protection for street children through a new UN guideline.
According to UNICEF there are 100 million street children worldwide. In Austria, too, there are about 500 children who have no permanent roof over their heads and live on the streets. No home, violence and hunger are circumstances that all street children worldwide experience. In order to survive, they not only beg, but also steal and prostitute themselves.
