Kirmes, also known as Kirchweih, is a fair or an outdoor festival that is usually organized for charitable purposes. The term comes from the Dutch language and is made up of "kerk" (church) and "mis" (fair). It originally referred to a mass and a patron saint's festival, which was celebrated on the anniversary of the founding of a church or in honor of the patron saint.
