8 January - National English Toffee Day in USA
Toffee is one of those delicious sweets that can serve as an ingredient for larger candies or a variety of candy in and of itself. Toffee and Caramel are different in their ingredient constitution. Toffee can be mistaken for caramel sometimes. Toffee gets its name from a Mediterranean rum made from molasses which was eventually used as a flavoring agent.
It could be that the origins of toffee come from the English due to the cheap source of sugar coming form the Caribbean in the 19th century. Indeed, there is a word for cheap Caribbean rum known as "tafia," which may or many not have to do with toffee. Tafia rum was often used to flavor candies because it was cheap.
Toffee didn’t appear in dictionaries until after 1825, making it something of a newcomer to the world of candy. Most food historians agree that the sweet treat likely originated in Wales and then rose to prominence across Britain and Europe where supplies of butter and eventually imported sugar were plentiful. English toffee maintains its extreme popularity due to its unique flavor profile and regional variations.
